Action Alert: Speak up for stronger water protections in West Virginia

Every three years, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection reviews the state’s water quality standards — the rules that determine whether our rivers, streams, and drinking water sources are protected from pollution.

Right now, DEP is accepting public comments for their 2028 Triennial Review.

This is our chance to strengthen water protections with new science for public health and wildlife. Can we count on you to take quick action before Monday’s deadline?

WV Rivers Coalition and partner organizations are urging DEP:

  • Develop water quality standards for conductivity to protect aquatic life.
  • Adopt EPA’s recommended water-column criterion for selenium.
  • Incorporate EPA Priority Pollutants into WQS to protect human health.
  • Develop watershed-based Trout Water designations.
  • Revise ammonia WQS based on updated science.
  • Develop WQS for PFAS to protect human health.
  • Revise 47CSR2 to bolster scientific integrity.

These updates would help protect drinking water sources, fish and wildlife habitat, outdoor recreation, and the health of communities across West Virginia.
