Sandstone Falls

The biggest falls on the oldest river. Sandstone Falls stretches 1500 feet across the entire New River just downstream from Hinton, WV. The falls mark the geological beginning of the New River Gorge and hosts a unique Appalachian riverside flat rock plant community. The Land and Water Conservation Fund was used to improve the visitor experience in 1975, when Sandstone Falls was a West Virginia state spark. Today, the National Park Service administers Sandstone Falls and a nearby visitor center for the New River Gorge National River.
