When the Japanese attacked the battleship USS West Virginia in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Mess Attendant Second Class Doris “Dorie” Miller launched into action. He manned anti aircraft guns and carried wounded shipmates to safety, earning a Navy Cross for his heroism. He was later killed in a separate action onboard the USS Liscomb Bay in 1943. Dorie Miller Park in Lewisburg is named in his honor. It received LWCF funding for new ballfield lights in 2015.
