Southern WV Coordinator – Job Description

Position Summary

As part of a state-wide Community Engagement Team, the Southern WV Coordinator assists with the outreach and coordination of grassroots involvement and coalition-building efforts. The Coordinator serves as the connector between WV Rivers, the public, and allied groups working on the ground to mobilize grassroots action. This position provides hands-on support for community outreach and education efforts, while also providing technical support to volunteer-led grassroots groups.

The Southern WV Coordinator works with the Community Engagement Team and other WV Rivers staff members to advance both clean water priorities and organizational priorities through collaboration with a variety of partners. This is a hybrid working position focused on projects throughout the Southern counties of West Virginia, with some travel to other regions of the state.

WV Rivers offers a competitive salary and robust benefits package. This full-time, exempt position pays between $40,000–$55,000, depending on experience. Current benefits include extremely generous PTO, fully employer-paid health, dental, and life insurance for the employee, and a 6% employer retirement contribution. We support a hybrid work-from-home model and provide reimbursement for eligible internet and/or phone expenses. All employees receive a laptop, printer, and basic office supplies to support remote work.

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct in-person, phone and electronic community outreach to promote advocacy efforts.
  2. Coordinate and facilitate individual and community meetings and events.
  3. Serve as the WV Rivers representative to organize grassroots support for federal, state, and local policy initiatives promoting the health of the Southern WV watersheds.
  4. Coordinate community organizations to implement watershed improvement projects and resist projects which bring more pollution to the region.
  5. Coordinate with WV Rivers staff and partners on regulatory oversight and compliance of facilities in the Southern counties of WV.
  6. Serve as a representative of WV Rivers by making presentations at public meetings, partner meetings, and providing interviews with media.
  7. Review mini-grant applications with the Community Engagement team and encourage new applicants from the Southern WV counties to apply.
  8. Provide technical assistance to volunteers and concerned citizens.
  9. Conduct and/or coordinate issue-based research of regulations, policies and proposed permits.
  10. Develop fact sheets, technical comments and presentations.
  11. Provide ongoing reports on project activities.

Qualifications:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills – including, effective persuasive communication to inspire action, diplomatic communication to foster trust and respect, and clear and direct communication to increase project and organizational efficiencies.
  • Strong public speaking, meeting facilitation skills and event coordination experience.
  • Ability to work remotely, including comfort with technologies that support remote work (such as online activity tracking tools, conference calling, and video conferencing).
  • Experience with grassroots organizing, advocacy campaigns, project management, volunteer management and coalition-building preferred.
  • Experience with environmental issues, an understanding of regulatory processes and policies a plus.

Work Location & Logistics

  • This is a hybrid position based in West Virginia, with a mix of remote and in-person responsibilities.
  • Employee must reside in West Virginia and maintain a private, secure personal workspace suitable for confidential work. Residence in Southern West Virginia strongly preferred.
  • While typical organization operating hours are day shift, this position requires occasional evening and weekend work to accommodate community meetings and events.
  • Reliable high-speed internet capable of supporting cloud-based apps and regular video conferencing are required.
  • Smartphone. The employee may be required to download and use company-approved apps for communication, timekeeping, and security.

Travel & Transportation

  • Travel within West Virginia, especially Southern West Virginia (approximately 20%) is required for in-person meetings and events.
  • A valid driver’s license and proof of auto insurance are required for travel responsibilities.

Physical & Technical Requirements

  • Ability to use a computer for extended periods.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Outlook, Excel, SharePoint, Teams) and familiarity with cloud-based collaboration tools.
  • Experience working in remote or distributed work environments preferred.
