LWCF funds River Refuge

What’s 392 miles long and paid for by the Land and Water Conservation Fund? Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge! The refuge consists of two dozen islands from Pennsylvania to Kentucky, but because the West Virginia state line extends to the western bank of the Ohio River, over 85% of the refuge is in the Mountain State. The islands provide important habitat for riparian wildlife and nesting birds. All are open to the public from dawn to dusk, but unless you have a boat, the only island you can access — using an old bridge — is Middle Island in St. Marys. You can also check out the Refuge visitor center in Williamson.
