Protect WV’s Water: Ask Lawmakers to Support Water-Use Transparency for Data Centers

We need your help before next week! House Bill 4983 – one of the “Data Center” bills – is now in the markup and passage stage in the House Committee on Energy and Public Works.

We are talking about LARGE industrial facilities (up to 2,250 acres!) that house computer servers and can use significant amounts of water for cooling systems and operations.

HB4983 advances the rulemaking for 145 CSR 20, which passed the House during the 2025 session as House Bill 2014. This rule defines the process for certification of Data Center sites.

Members of the House Energy & Public Works have the opportunity to improve the rule by adding stronger transparency around water use. Contact them now!

Massive data center facilities have already been proposed in Logan, Mingo, Tucker, and Mason Counties. Contact WV lawmakers about data centers and water-use transparency now. Tell them to amend House Bill 4983.

As West Virginia sees increased interest in data center development, lawmakers must ensure communities and local decision-makers can understand how the proposed data center development and operation could affect their water resources.

Join us in asking legislators to support an amendment that increases disclosure and planning around water, especially for communities without reliable access to water in their homes and in drought-prone regions of our state.
