WWVRC introduces the manual, "Helping Solve Local Wastewater Problems" (information contributed by Evan Hansen, WVRC's Science Advisor)
Many watershed organizations across West Virginia are grappling with pollution from untreated or poorly treated wastewater. Whether from straight pipes, failing septic systems, or overflows from centralized treatment plants, wastewater pollution can make it unsafe to use rivers and streams and can hinder economic development.
In September, the West Virginia Rivers Coalition completed a wastewater manual in partnership with Canaan Valley Institute and several watershed organizations across the state. The goal of this manual is to help groups work in local communities to solve wastewater problems.
The manual describes situations where traditional infrastructure solutions are appropriate, and also introduces alternative approaches helpful for addressing the tough problems encountered in West Virginia. The manual is designed to help watershed groups and local decision-makers find a system that will work best, and to provide information necessary to start working toward the implementation of locally developed solutions.
The West Virginia Rivers Coalition is now arranging meetings with watershed organization boards, staff, and/or volunteers to discuss local wastewater issues and to introduce the manual. We can arrange to fit any venue, from a slot at regular monthly meetings to full-day weekend workshops. Please contact WVRC Science Advisor Evan Hansen at 304-292-2450 or ehansen@wvrivers to discuss setting up such a meeting. Copies of the wastewater manual are also available upon request.
